"MY CLOSEST FRIEND"
I'm known by some people for my art work, and by some for my music, but what most do not know is how God saved and delivered me from drug addiction.
As a young man, 15 years of age, I had my first experiment with drugs (marijuana) one Sunday evening after church. The feeling it gave me was unlike anything I had ever experienced and I immediately became sold on what would become my closest friend. The worst thing about that day was experiencing what I learned to be crashing (the coming down or wearing off of the drug). The drug was something that made me forget every problem, gave a super shy kid the boldness to say or do anything to get the attention of girls, made me feel like a tough guy, worthy of running with the toughest gang in three different ‘hoods’.
With all of this going for me, I couldn't wait to ascent back into what I considered heaven on Earth. There were songs by Led Zeppelin and the O’Jays and many more that made the ride seem so smooth and so right. My boys in the gang were impressed at the way I could deceive my parents and older people in the hood by covering my way of life with a cloak of choir singing every Sunday without fail, no matter how high we got the night before.
It didn't take long before the deceitfulness of drugs entangled me in its own downward spin. I was soon recruited by my supplier to take drugs into the schools to push to the students and even to teachers who were interested.
"THE DOWNWARD SPIN"
I earned a cut and a rep’ for being someone that they could all depend on. I even managed to somehow keep my grades up and become one of the best linebackers in my schools football history.
I was notoriously known for never playing sober. The downward spin carried me deeper by giving me such a drive that I graduated from mere marijuana to hash, to every kind of pill there was, to angel dust, and even cocaine. The spin gave me a chauffeur-driven ride to becoming so desperate for a hit that I began to steal money from my mom and dad. The pull of my friend (drugs) was so strong that it even over-rode my conscience and my respect for my parents who worked very hard to give my brother and me everything we wanted.
"GOD STILL CARED"
Its so amazing that even in the depths of my sin, God still cared enough to want to turn my life around and reveal His plan for my life, even though at the time I thought He didn't care. I played the religious game. I went to church, sang in the choir, and had what I considered to be a respect for God. My life was mine – and what would God want to do with someone like me?
1976 was my senior year of High School. This would become the most important year of my life. It was a sunny day, perfect for getting high in the park. Our neighborhood pool was there. Man, there was nothing like getting super high with the guys, diggin’ a summer breeze, and trippin’ on the activity of the pool.
"A THORN IN MY SIDE"
There was one problem with the picture, a thorn in my side: a lifeguard who had gotten what he called "saved." For some strange reason he couldn't keep it to himself. We all knew him as Big Mike. It was cool that we were there destroying our lives with drugs, but strange that he would try to force his new-found experience of receiving Christ as his personal savior down our throats. You see, I was used to dealing with anyone annoying. Remember, my boys and I belonged to a serious group and we were all packing that day.
Even though the other guys were getting pretty fed up, for some reason I wanted to hear what Mike had to say. So, without looking too interested, I listened to every word. He spoke of how I needed to allow Christ to save me and grant me a personal relationship with God through faith in His Son, Jesus. I had heard all about this many times before, but I never took it seriously to heart. But there was a difference in Big Mike's life that was even obvious to a drug addict.
Though his words were powerful, Mikes constant confrontations were damaging my rep. I had to figure a way to get him off my back. He bluffed me by asking me to go to church with him. At the time, Mike was a student at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Because of the distance, it was easy for me to get out of, but when he offered to get the entire church to come to our neighborhood just for me, I was shocked. I held my ground and my plan to get him off my back by agreeing to go to church with him. My plan was more elaborate than he will ever know. I planned to go to church with him at 7:00 p.m. like he wanted. I perceived that these people he was telling me about were emotional and when they got caught up in their emotions, I would sneak out the back door, meet my supplier, and graduate from cocaine to the top dog of speed.
"GOD'S PLAN FOR MY LIFE"
I soon found out that Gods plan for my life would supersede mine and far beyond. The choir began to sing. My plan was still safe until I listened to the sincere words of the songs that touched my heart and saturated my mind like no drug had ever done. The minister began to minister a word that seemed to uncover everything I had so skillfully hidden. Alone with his message came a compassion, grace, mercy, and unconditional love that no drug, girlfriend, or gang had ever come close to.
God began to speak to my heart. He let me know that no matter how bad and messed up my life had become, He wanted to wash away my sin with the Blood of His Son, start a new personal relationship with me that very night, and use me to fulfill His plan and purpose for my life. I was captivated to find out that the Lord was more than a sermon on a Sunday. He was real, packing a love that was more powerful than any drug I had ever known. He filled me with His Holy Spirit which immediately gave me a high second to none. The best thing about this new high is that I've never crashed and never will!
"I'VE BEEN BLESSED"
I have received commissions from great athletes and coaches such as Gene Stallings, Derrick Thomas, Steve Bartkowski, Bill Fralic, Domonique Wilkins, Tony Dorsett, Ozzie Newsome, Professional Bull Rider J.W. Hart, four time World Champion Bull Rider Terry Don West, and the honor from the Allison family of commemorating the life and career of great NASCAR legend Davey Allison. I've been blessed to unveil original artwork at Planet Hollywood in Reno, the All Star Café in Las Vegas, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and the Houston Astrodome Corporate Office. My work has been chosen for permanent display at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham, the International Motor Sports of Fame in Talladega, and the Paul W. Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa.
I've had the honor to receive numerous awards such as being selected one of the top 38 sports artists in the world by Beckett Sports Publishing of Dallas. I've also been honored with a proclamation from the Governor of Alabama, and the key to my home city of Homewood, Alabama. There will be many other paintings and projects in the future, with all honor and glory given to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
